WhatsApp is reportedly working on a username availability verification feature for its web client. This feature, which was discovered by WABetaInfo, seems to be part of the upcoming username system and will allow users to directly check if their desired username is available through the web version of the platform.
According to WABetaInfo, users are prompted to enter their preferred username into a designated field on the profile page. The verification feature works in real-time, which means the app checks if the username is available as it is typed. Available usernames are marked with a green checkmark and a message that confirms the name can be used.

On the other hand, a red alert icon is displayed when the name is already taken, with a message informing the user that the name is not available. Essentially, the system prevents the existence of duplicate usernames by ensuring users choose unique names for their accounts.
WhatsApp has been working on adding username support to the messaging platform for some time now, and it seems the company is still developing the feature. Implementing usernames on the platform should give users more privacy as unknown contacts will be shown their usernames rather than phone numbers. Of course, people who already have access to the phone numbers will still be able to find and contact these users on the app.

It is unclear when usernames will be added to WhatsApp, as no release date has been provided thus far. Either way, it should further improve privacy as it prevents strangers from having access to the users’ phone numbers, thus reducing the risk of spam, scams, or other unwanted interaction.
