E-commerce platform Taobao has announced plans to introduce a Bahasa Malaysia interface by June 2025. The move is aimed at aligning more closely with the language preferences of local users while enhancing the overall accessibility of its services in the country.
Commenting on the development, Taobao Malaysia country head Jess Lew said the upcoming Malay-language option reflects the brand’s commitment to localising its services. She noted that the new feature would offer Malaysian users a more accessible and seamless shopping experience, removing potential language-related barriers that might hinder user interaction with the platform.
Taobao adds that its app was ranked as the second-most downloaded shopping application on the iOS chart in Malaysia as of 16 April 2025. This suggests strong user engagement and growing trust in the platform among local consumers, further justifying the need for more tailored features such as local language support.
To recap, Malaysia and Singapore were the first regions to gain access to an English-language version of Taobao in September 2024. Additionally, the platform features estimated price conversions in Malaysian Ringgit for each product, further simplifying the cross-border shopping process for Malaysian consumers.
