Less than a month after the 4G version came out, Tecno officially released the Camon 40 Pro 5G. The mid-ranger is largely the same device as its 4G counterpart, with the exception of an improved display and a more powerful SoC.
Despite its modest price tag, the Camon 40 Pro 5G does stand out with its subtle yet unique design, at least on the back. The camera module gets a huge island to itself on the upper left side, which tapers off all the way to the bottom. However, instead of a separate glass block like you would see on most phones, Tecno opted for a smooth and uniform curve to connect the two parts of the back panel, making it feel seamless.
The rear plate also gets a matte finish with shiny highlights that give it a sheen you would find on a wet rock, but despite that, it is commendably fingerprint-resistant. There are also the orange accents, including the extra button on the side, which I will get into in a bit, to give it a pop of colour.
As for the display, I have to dock them a point for the pointless curved edges but otherwise, it’s a fine display all the same. The 1080p AMOLED panel gets a higher 144Hz refresh rate than the 4G model’s standard 120Hz figure, standing at 6.78 inches with an undisclosed peak brightness rating. I haven’t tested it out under direct sunlight yet, since it was cloudy the entire day I was writing this, but so far, the outdoor visibility seems acceptable. However, it obviously falls short of a flagship-level display.
The camera island gets a total of three lenses, made up of a 50MP primary shooter with OIS, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, and a flicker sensor. Up front, the Camon 40 Pro 5G houses a 50MP snapper with autofocus. At the top of the phone is an infrared blaster, so you can use it to control some of your home appliances, while for audio, it is equipped with stereo speakers that support Dolby Atmos.
Regarding the two orange elements on the phone, one of them is a customisable button while the other is an LED indicator. The latter is simple enough to understand; it is used to indicate notifications, when you are recording, and when the phone is charging.
The “One-Tap Button” can be mapped to nearly any app you can think of, and you can even set it to specific functions on some apps. Ironically, despite its name, nothing happens if you press the button once, as it only recognises double presses and long presses.
Powering the mid-ranger is a 5,200mAh battery with support for 45W wired charging. On the processing side, it runs on a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Ultimate chipset with support for 5G, NFC, and undisclosed versions of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. This is paired with 8GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage.
Software-wise, the Camon 40 Pro 5G ships with HiOS 15 based on Android 15. It is packed with the brand’s own AI features such as its Ella voice assistant, Smart Touch, Writing Assistant, Translation Assistant and much more. It even gets support for Google’s Circle To Search tool.
The Tecno Camon 40 Pro 5G gets a retail price of RM1,099 and is available in three colour options. Stay tuned for a full review of the mid-ranger.
