Maybank today officially announced its role in the second phase of the cross-border QR payment linkage between Malaysia and Cambodia, led by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC). As the strategic banking partner and the sponsoring and settlement bank, the bank enables its customers to make instant retail payments in Cambodia via the MAE App using the KHQR standard, with low currency conversion fees and 24/7 access.
With this recent development, Maybank’s QR payment feature now spans five countries, including Malaysia, Cambodia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and China. According to the bank’s president and group CEO Dato’ Khairussaleh Ramli, the initiative reflects the bank’s continued efforts to support financial inclusion and promote seamless regional commerce. He also attributed the successful launch to the strong partnership between BNM, NBC, and industry players such as Bakong and PayNet.

The payment process is designed for ease of use, requiring only three steps:
- Navigate to Scan & Pay on the MAE App.
- Scan the local QR code of the merchant. The summary page including the amount in the local currency, conversion fee and amount to be paid in your home currency will be displayed.
- Click ‘Pay Now’ to complete the payment.

This latest rollout follows the initial phase launched in September 2024, which enabled Cambodian travellers to use the Bakong App for DuitNow QR payments in Malaysia. Maybank adds that it aims to further support regional financial integration to help drive cross-border connectivity and economic growth.
