We have seen reports from last year noting that social media umbrella company Meta has tested its own AI chatbot across WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. Which was probably the most common application of AI chatbots currently, but the company has decided to take things further for Instagram specifically. And it’s apparently using AI to help people write comments on their friends’ posts.
Jonah Manzano has shared on X, previously Twitter, screenshots and a video of the feature, simply called “Write with Meta AI”, in action. The first screenshot is essentially describing the way the feature works, which is basically getting Meta AI to analyse the photo you want to comment on. It then gives you suggestions based on that. If you don’t like the suggestions that you see, you can edit the suggestion, or get it to generate more options.

In a statement to TechCrunch, a Meta spokesperson said “we regularly test more features for you to use Meta AI across our apps. Outside of DMs, you will find Meta AI there for you in areas like comments, feed, groups, and search to make your experiences more fun and useful”. Though the statement did not include the feature’s rollout to a wider user base.
It’s a strange decision overall, especially when social media in general has had a bot problem. The last thing a social media needs is for genuine users to be confused for one.
