One of the key topics set to take center stage at the upcoming ASEAN Summit is the introduction of a standardized electric vehicle (EV) policy. This initiative aims to strengthen regional sustainability efforts and accelerate the transition to clean energy.

According to Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz, senior authorities and regional leaders have already begun discussions on standardizing EV batteries and developing a cross-border EV charging infrastructure. He also stated that the timeline and framework for this policy will be finalized and announced during the summit.

This policy is expected to reduce range anxiety for EV drivers while fostering the growth of a robust regional supply chain within the automotive industry. “This common EV policy will help Asean countries collaborate more effectively in meeting sustainability targets,” the minister added.

Despite advancements in EV technology, range anxiety remains a major concern for potential buyers. While many automakers are producing high-range EV models, the lack of adequate charging infrastructure continues to hinder widespread adoption.

This is where standardized EV policies play a crucial role. A harmonized approach to EV regulations ensures seamless mobility, safety, and sustainability while driving innovation and competitiveness in the EV industry. With the market expanding rapidly, it is essential that policies are in place to ensure equal access to charging facilities, regardless of vehicle brand or manufacturer.

For example, a unified EV policy would enable all EVs to access charging stations from any provider, eliminating compatibility issues and making EV ownership more convenient. Beyond charging infrastructure, a common EV policy can also enhance battery safety and sustainability.

Standardized testing and certification procedures will ensure that EV batteries meet strict safety regulations, reducing the risks of malfunctions and hazardous incidents. Additionally, these policies can promote the responsible and sustainable sourcing of essential materials like lithium and cobalt, which are crucial for EV battery production. Ensuring ethical and environmentally friendly practices in mining, processing, and recycling will further reinforce ASEAN’s commitment to green mobility.

As ASEAN nations push for a cleaner and more sustainable future, a standardized EV policy will be instrumental in removing barriers, enhancing infrastructure, and promoting innovation. By working together, the region can create a seamless EV ecosystem that benefits both consumers and the industry alike. The official announcement during the ASEAN Summit will mark a major milestone in the region’s journey towards electric mobility.
