EA Makes Open Source Four Command & Conquer Games

Pretty out of character for any video game publisher, never mind EA.

In an uncharacteristic act of generosity, Electronic Arts (EA) has made four old Command & Conquer games open source. Or more accurately, their source code have been made available freely under the GPL license. These are the first C&C game, Red Alert, Renegade and Generals.

It’s also not just a matter of putting said source code up online either. Polygon reports that work was being put in to recover and restore the source code for all four games. With that in mind, it seems an extra charitable act by EA, a publisher that said that Dragon Age: The Veilguard failed to meet expectations because it wasn’t a live service.

Beyond the four now open source games, the report also mentions that EA is bringing Steam Workshop support to “more contemporary” C&C titles, complete with a modding support pack. Though this looks to only support titles that use the SAGE engine.

This is naturally good news for fans of the series, and probably the best since 2020 when EA said it would release the source code of the games in its C&C Remastered Collection to those who bought the collection. All that said, it doesn’t look like there will be a new entry into the series, at least not anytime soon.
