AMD Radeon Logo Supposedly Redesigned Ahead Of Next-Gen GPU Launch

The rumour mill has been working overtime of late, churning out rumour after rumour about NVIDIA’s alleged and upcoming RTX 30 series GPUs, as well some bits regarding AMD’s new CPU lineup and “Big Navi” Radeon GPU. In regards to the latter of the two AMD points, it appears that some cosmetic changes have been made to the namesake.

Thanks to an eagle-eyed Twitter user by the name of Casmoden (@Casmoden), it appears that AMD has given its Radeon logo a redesign of sorts. Casmoden noticed the changes at the end of the PC gameplay trailer of Gearbox’s upcoming title, Godfall.

It’s a subtle change, but if you pay close enough attention to the new logo, you’ll notice that some of the alphabets now more resemble the fonts of AMD’s logo for its Ryzen CPU. Specifically, the “R”, “E”, and “N” are now identical to the ones on the Ryzen logo.

Now a font change may seem like much to the majority of you, but one thing to point out is that AMD rarely makes these changes without reason. In this case, the change in logo design could be in preparation for the arrival of the CPU and GPU maker’s upcoming “Big Navi” GPU. That is expected to be based on AMD’s 2nd generation Radeon DNA architecture, otherwise known as RDNA2.

As a support reference, the last time AMD redesigned its Radeon branding was back in 2016, when it launched its 14nm Polaris-based RX400 series graphics cards. Four years on, and the RX 5000 series cards brandishes that very same logo.

The current AMD Radeon logo, in use since 2016.

Unfortunately, there’s still no exact launch date for Big Navi, save for other rumours that point to a launch date sometime before the arrival of both Sony and Microsoft’s next-generation consoles. Further, the card is expected to finally come with hardware support for real-time ray-tracing, enabling the cards to go up against NVIDIA’s own current-generation Turing-based GeForce RTX series GPUs.
