TM’s aim to become the main drive of 5G rollout in Malaysia is not exactly a secret as the company has boldly suggested back in October 2019 that the full set of 5G spectrum should be allocated to them. However, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has yet to even begin the actual tender selection process for the 5G spectrum but despite that, TM has already begun to beef up its 5G team.

According to the listing on its recruitment website, TM has recently listed 29 positions that are related to 5G technology. Among them include Mobile Core Network Expert, Mobile IP & Transport Network Expert, Mobile Roaming Expert, Radio Access Network (RAN) Planning & Optimization Expert, and Spectrum Expert.

Depending on respective positions, the candidates not only need to meet the necessary education and knowledge requirements, but they also need to have at least between 5 to 10 years of experience. It is also interesting to note that these positions will also be tied to what seems to be a newly opened establishment at the company called TM 5G Academy.

On the same day that the TM 5G recruitment goes public, the company has also announced that 5G network has now been activated at its corporate headquarters, Menara TM. In a response to our query, the company revealed that the 5G network at Menara TM is a currently a Non-Standalone (NSA) implementation and it is running on 3700MHz to 3800MHz frequencies which are collectively part of the sub-6 frequencies.

Menara TM

Before you rush to Menara TM to check out the 5G network, the company has yet to install any 5G-related public demo over there though. Then again, we predict that it is only a matter of time before TM put up a 5G showcase over there especially given the fact that the company already overseeing so many 5G implementations in Langkawi and Subang Jaya as part of its commitment to the national-scale 5G Demonstration Project (5GDP) phase.
