If you watched the brutal bear scene in The Revenant and thought to yourself, “I wonder what it would be like if this scene is played for laughs,” then you’re in luck. The producers of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (who also wrote and directed The Lego Movie) are teaming up with the directing duo of 2019’s biggest surprise, Ready or Not, for a currently untitled film simply described as a “unique bear-driven horror-comedy — with heart.”
Well, okay then.
Universal has picked up an untitled spec written by Jimmy Warden that Lord and Miller, the triple-threat filmmakers behind such offbeat comedies such as 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie, will produce. Radio Silence — consisting of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella — will shepherd the project, with Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett directing and Villella producing.
As of yet, there is no official logline, but the movie was reportedly pitched as a hybrid of 2019’s R-rated comedy Good Boys and the survival-thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant. The film sounds bonkers, ridiculous and I’m all for it. Hollywood needs more original ideas. Make no mistake, this is an original idea. Calling it ‘Good Boys meets The Revenant‘ is simply how Hollywood processes original ideas in an effort to sell it.
The combination of producers Lord & Miller, and directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett is what gets me super excited. Lord & Miller are fantastic producers who have a sharp eye for incredible projects (22 Jump Street, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Lego Batman Movie), while Ready or Not was a film that sort of came out of nowhere and swept us of our feet.
In my review of Ready or Not, I wrote:
Funny, crass (too crass for the losers at LPF), violent, thrilling and an absolutely unorthodox film that is marinated in a barrel of red corn syrup. Keep your kids at home, take two shots and have a blast.
