Back in August, Tencent and Nintendo signed a deal so that the latter can bring its games and the Switch, as well as its games, into China. It looks like the former is planning to do more with this partnership. Recent reports point to the Chinese conglomerate planning to make games with Nintendo characters for the western market.
A Tencent official said that the company wants to reach console gamers in the US and Europe. The company not only hopes to make console games with Nintendo characters, but also “learn the essence of making console games from Nintendo engineers”.
A collaboration to bring titles into China by Tencent isn’t exactly unusual. Companies outside of the country are expected to partner with a Chinese company if they want to enter the market. What is unusual, on the other hand, is Tencent making use of such partnership to expand its reach outside of China beyond holding shares in companies like Activision Blizzard and Ubisoft.
As of now, it’s unclear as to what’s the extent of Tencent’s plans for the game. Considering it will make use of Nintendo’s characters, chances are it will also be for the Switch. But it’s best to not hold our breaths for it until an official announcement is made.
