The final battle of Avengers: Endgame is perhaps the most emotionally-charged, bombastic action sequence since The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (discounting Game of Thrones). Who can forget that magnificent moment when Sam Wilson says “on your left” before the myriad of characters we have grown to love over the course of 22 films marched through portals. “Avengers… assemble,” Captain America said with grit.
The MCU, for all its greatness, has regularly been criticised for its less than exemplary special effects. *cough* Black Panther *cough*. However, the same can’t be said about the final battle of Avengers: Endgame. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo along with their VFX team crafted something that is borderline flawless and utterly believable. Believe it or not, it was shot mostly in front of a giant green screen.
Check out the behind-the-scenes video of the third act battle:
The video comes courtesy of Weta Digital, a VFX company that has been making magic for more than two decades. Weta, by the way, is the same company that did the visual effects for films like The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Avatar and many of the DCEU films as well. In the video above, we see a bunch of actors lined up in front of a green screen and charging forwards as it intercuts with completed footage we saw in the film. It’s movie magic at its best!
After its re-release, Avengers: Endgame became the highest-grossing film of all time (sans inflation) at the global box office, beating Avatar‘s 10-year record. As it stands, the film has raked in over $US 2.796 billion, a staggering number that will probably go unbeaten for another 10 years. Endgame is also the highest-grossing film in Malaysia, earning more than $US 21 million (RM 87 million) at the Malaysian box office.
