Robert Rodriquez, who helmed Alita: Battle Angel is currently working on a superhero sci-fi fantasy project with Netflix titled We Can Be Heroes. Rodriguez will not only direct but also write and produce the original film which will star a bunch of recognisable names including Priyanka Chopra, Christian Slater, Boyd Holbrook, Sung Kang and Pedro Pascal.
Per Deadline, the film will follow:
The children of Earth’s superheroes after their parents have been kidnapped by alien invaders. The children must team up and learn to work together if they want to save their parents and the world.
While this is right up Robert Rodriquez’s alley, who spent a large part of his career directing films of this genre — he’s the man behind the Spy Kids franchise too — I have never been a huge fan of his movies besides Sin City and maybe From Dusk Till Dawn. I found Alita: Battle Angel awfully bland as well.
Having said that, Alita did go on to make $US 404 million at the global box office and have garnered a passionate following as well. The film may have gotten mediocre to poor reviews from critics, but general audiences seem to dig it — just compare the film’s critic score vs audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. So, there’s little doubt in my mind that We Can Be Heroes would certainly catch fire on Netflix.
The cast definitely gets me a little bit more excited. Priyanka Chopra — recent controversy aside — has a natural charm to her. Sure, she hasn’t actually starred in many good films in Hollywood, her work on TV series, Quantico has received praises from critics. Not to mention, she’s actually been in some highly entertaining Indian films. Sung Kang, who played Han in the Fast & Furious franchise is always a delight to watch and Pedro Pascal (who’s excellent in Narcos) certainly adds a layer of intrigue to the film.
There are no details on when We Can Be Heroes will be dropping on Netflix, but Deadline’s report notes that the film is currently in production.
