The fact that fans are still dissecting and discussing every single plot detail of Avengers: Endgame is further proof of the film’s cultural significance. One scene frequently brought up in discussions is the unexpected ending of Avengers: Endgame which sees Captain America go back in (alternate) time to restore the Infinity Stones, only to return to the prime timeline as an old married man,
In a recent Reddit AMA session, a fan asked the Russo brothers how exactly Captain America returned to the prime timeline? The fan pointed out that Steve Rogers wasn’t wearing a quantum suit when he had the heartwarming conversation with Sam and passed on his Captain America mantle. It’s a great question that not many people thought about. Could it be a plot hole?
According to the directors, it isn’t. The Russos, who also helmed The Winter Soldier, Civil War and Infinity War had this to say:
“You are correct in that he would have had to have worn the quantum suit, using a pym particle to make the jump. He’s not wearing the suit on the bench, because that is not the exact moment to which he returned.”
How interesting. I think it’s safe to say that most of us assumed Steve Rogers travelled back to that exact moment in the prime timeline. However, the directors seem to imply that for whatever reason, Steve Rogers may have travelled back to a different moment in the prime timeline. Surely it can’t be just to take a warm shower and change his clothes.
Naturally, this brought about some very funny responses by fans, including this one:

It’s great that we still have no definitive answer. The way in which Steve Rogers side stepped Sam’s question in the film and the Russo brothers’ vague response in this AMA leaves room for Marvel Studios to explore exactly what happened when Cap went back in (alternate) time. Here’s to hoping we get a Disney+ series on this.
