Recently at CinemaCon, Disney promoted both X-Men: Dark Phoenix and New Mutants as part of their upcoming slate. Yes, ever since Disney’s acquisition of Fox became official about a week or so ago, the unreleased Fox-Marvel movies will now be distributed by Disney. Dark Phoenix seems to lack fanfare as most people are aware that the X-Men characters will be rebooted before they eventually make an appearance once again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Having said that, it looks like the last of the Fox-produced X-Men movies could actually be one heck of a goodbye.
In an interview with Collider, Sophie Turner (you may know her as Sansa Stark), who plays the younger version of Jean Grey in the X-Men movies mentioned that Dark Phoenix is very, very different from all the other X-Men movies that have come before.
“It’s far more character driven movie and more emotional. Just like how Logan was very different in style to all the other Wolverine and X-Men movies… it’s kinda the same with this. Logan was kinda like a Western Style and this is kinda like a family drama more than a superhero movie.”
While we know that this particular storyline with these set of actors won’t be continuing their journey beyond Dark Phoenix, I’m still hoping that it would turn out to be a great movie. After all, Batman has been rebooted many times, but it doesn’t take away from the quality of Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy and also Tim Burton’s 1989 Gothic rendition of the caped crusader.
Sure, it’s a press junket and Sophie Turner would of course only say great things about the movie she’s starring in. But I would be lying if I said her comments didn’t pique my interest. The emotional family drama aspect of it all intrigues me. Hopefully, the movie plays out as well as Turner makes it out to be.
