The Usage of Non-Certified Digital TV and IPTV Boxes Could Lead To RM 100,000 Fine and Jail Time

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) earlier today has posted a notice to remind consumers not to obtain digital terrestrial TV (DTTV) or IPTV apparatus that don’t come with MCMC label. The same notice is also aimed to inform retailer to not carry such devices for sale.

The notice further also pointed out that selling or owning DTTV and IPTV devices that have not went through certification process or didn’t obtain approval from related authorities is an offence under Regulation 16 of the Communications and Multimedia (Technical Standards) Regulations 2000 which themselves are part of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

MYTV Advance Decoder
MYTV decoders are some of the handful DTTV boxes that have been certified for usage in Malaysia. After all, they are the official external decoders for myFreeview transmission.

The general penalty for the offence is a maximum fine of RM 100,000, jail time of not more than six months, or both. Despite these serious repercussions, we have to say that the enforcement of the regulations is still quite lax since plenty of non-approved DTTV and IPTV devices can be easily obtained in our market especially with the recent rise of e-commerce.

For those who wondering whether their DTTV and IPTV devices have been certified by local authorities or otherwise, they can do so via SIRIM QAS International’s website or the dedicated Check Your Label mobile apps.
