Cheesy pickup lines are certainly not a new thing, but rarely do we see localized versions of them appearing online – let alone lines that are wordplays of Malay names. Last weekend, memes of popular actors containing Malaysian pickup lines went viral online…but interestingly, only the day after Valentine’s Day.
[Update: Thanks for clarifying, Judith!] The first instance of these lines seem to have come from Says.my on Valentine’s Day, which published a series of pickup line memes featuring a host of popular (and good looking) Hollywood celebrities, as well this Facebook post featuring everybody’s favourite villain, Tom Hiddleston. It was then picked up by local radio station Hitz.fm, who shared the same image a day later on its Facebook page.
A collection of the images can be found above, tweeted by @rykalhakimi. That tweet has since been retweeted over 3,000 times in just under 24 hours, while the Facebook posts from Hitz.fm has been liked about 11,000 times and shared about 1,500 times each. The original Says.my post on Facebook has been shared over 200 times, confirming that the content clearly struck a tune with Malaysians.
Amazingly, none of these images have cropped up on our Kopitiam subforum, but instead only appearing on social media platforms Facebook and Twitter. Check out our favourites below!
