Earlier this morning at Facebook’s very own press event, the social networking service website announced a new feature called Graph Search that allows you to perform very specific search queries within Facebook. It’s not a new search engine, it’s not a place for you to search for the meaning of a word or to find out more information about a band, according to Facebook, Graph Search is a new way for you to discover things that already being shared on Facebook like people, photos, places and interest. You can look for friends who share the same interests as you, people who live in your city, or even find the type of shows your doctor friends watch; the sort of information you wouldn’t be able to find with web search.
At its initial stage, Graph Search will only focus on four main areas – people, photos, places and interests, for example,
People: “friends who live in my city”
Photos: “photos I like”
Places: “restaurants in San Francisco”
Interests: “music my friends like”
“Over the coming months”, Facebook will expand Graph Search to allow users to search for more things like wall posts or even song listens.
If you’re worried about privacy, don’t be because according to Facebook, 10% of its computing power is dedicated to privacy. Signing up for Graph Search will not in any way affect your privacy settings; the new search feature will only list out things you can already see within Facebook.
It’s not available yet though, Graph Search has only been rolled out to a very limited number of users. If you wish to get into the waitlist, visit www.facebook.com/graphsearch.
