The rumours that Maxis will be bringing in the much hyped iPhone 3g to the Malaysian market has been going around for sometime now. There has been many false dawns, as well as other similar rumours involving rival operators. Apple Inc who manufacture the devices usually sign a single agreement with one operator from each country to have exclusive distribution rights to the device. They have so far remained tight lipped about whether Maxis has indeed been granted the rights for the Malaysian Market.
Our forums have been abuzz over the last week or so with insider news that Maxis have secured distribution rights and will be making an official announcement tomorrow (March 11th 2009). We also have been told that the iPhone package will be offered to 'select customers' by the end of the month. At time of writing, neither the Maxis website or the Malaysian Apple store have any updates on the iPhone's availability.
Officially unlocked versions of the 3G iPhone are readily available for purchase at select retailers as well as on online trading sites. The pricing still remains rather steep for these sets which are brought in from neighbouring countries, so it remains to be seen what kind of pricing package Maxis will be offering. We do believe that if Maxis are indeed selling the iPhone as an exclusive distributor, they will be forced to tie down the sets to a package plan for at least 2 years.
We'll continue probing with our cangkuls and update this post when we hit something solid.
