Nokia’s MeeGo development team may have long disbanded, but the pursuit of making a product that will change the world continues to live on with members of the team. As many will know, most of the MeeGo team banded together to form Jolla, and are continuing the MeeGo development that Nokia discarded. Others, such as Sotiris Makrygiannis, the former Director of Applications of the Nokia MeeGo team, left to form another company, CloudBerryTec. However, very little has been heard by them since then.
On the second anniversary of the launch of the Nokia N9, CloudBerryTec announced its first official product: Eliademy. Based on open-source cloud solutions, Eliademy is a free online classroom with a goal of “democratizing education with technology”. The platform allows for anyone to create, share and manage courses, and anyone from around the world to enroll in the course of their choice. Currently, Eliademy (from the Greek word “elia” for olive tree) has been deployed in Finland and Malta, with many other countries to be deployed soon. According to Makrygiannis, unlike other online classroom platforms, Eliademy is completely free of charge, and is part of a global vision of free education for all.
Just like the original OSSO goal from 2007, these self-styled “MeeGo veterans” believe Eliademy to be a product that will change the world. Unlike MeeGo and N9 though, the aim this time appears to be far greater and much more noble.
