Soon, Putrajaya will be relying on an AI-based traffic management system. Putrajaya Corporation recently shared an update on its social media platforms informing road users that work to upgrade the system is underway.
According to the post, the transition to the new system is split into three phases. The second stage is currently taking place. This phase follows proof-of-concept trials at select locations, including Lebuh Wawasan, Persiaran Timur – Jln P14, as well as Persiaran Perdana.

The current stage involves replacing equipment at the intersections. The local authority explains that the system will need time for the integration process. It also went on to advise users to remain patient during this time. Once that’s done, the third and final phase will see 140 traffic light intersections in the city upgraded to the new system.
How it works

The system relies on VA cameras to identify the types and number of vehicles on the road, while also accurately measuring the distance of the waiting queue. This allows the system to determine the traffic conditions in real time. Thus, it will be able to adjust the green light according to the situation. At the same time, the AI will predict traffic patterns.
Aside from that, the new system will connect nearby intersections. Dubbed “Green Wave”, it coordinates the lights to create a continuous, non-stop flow of traffic.
Why the change?

As stated in the post, the goal of this transition is to ensure a smoother traffic flow in the city. The upgrade aims to create a more efficient management system compared to the existing one. In theory, this should lead to fewer road congestion issues.
It is worth noting that Putrajaya is not alone in implementing AI-driven solutions. The Ipoh City Council introduced smart traffic lights to the city. Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur City Hall enlisted ITMAX System Berhad to provide services for a smart traffic light system. In a similar vein, some cities in the US use AI-powered systems for managing traffic, such as the NoTraffic platform in Arlington, Texas.

That said, such concerns may still be a ways from now. Putrajaya Corporation did not reveal a timeline for the upgrade, so it’s unclear when the system will be fully realised.
