LRT commuters will now encounter reverse vending machines (RVMs) at select high-traffic stations to help them recycle on the go. This is part of Prasarana Malaysia’s initiative to support the development of sustainable urban mobility.

Idzqandar Abu Bakar, Prasarana Group chief health, safety, security, environment and sustainable development officer, said not only do these RVMs simplify the recycling process but also promote “positive behavioural change through smart technology and reward systems”. He also said that the installations of RVMs were in line with the Prasarana Sustainability Roadmap, targeting a recycling rate of 30% by 2030.

Among the machines introduced is Klean, an artificial intelligence-based RVM that accepts plastic bottles and aluminium cans. Users who recycle the aforementioned objects will receive reward points via the Klean mobile app. They can use the points for vouchers from selected partner merchants such as Zus Coffee, Grab, and Jaya Grocer.

Another machine is the Atlas Ecopod recycling machine, which also allows users to recycle and receive digital rewards. According to The Edge Malaysia, users can directly redeem their points at the adjacent vending machines.  Fun fact: the Atlas Ecopod is recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s thinnest RVM.

Both machines feature data-tracking systems that monitor user engagement and the amount of recyclable materials, supporting the rollout of data-driven sustainability initiatives. Prasarana has installed 16 RVM units at its facilities, including Menara Prasarana and the Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd headquarters, as of this writing.

Lastly, Prasarana is also welcoming strategic collaborations and private sector sponsorships for the installation of RVMs at select rail stations. This is in line with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) aim of having a greener and more sustainable city.
