GOG, the digital distribution platform that sells video games DRM-free, has been bought out. As of today, the company belongs to Michał Kiciński, one of the co-founders of CD PROJEKT, who is also the co-founder of this platform.
The new deal between the GOG and Kiciński includes the GOG.com storefront and the Galaxy platform. CDPR will also cover 100% of the shares in GOG for the rough estimate of US$25.2 million (~RM102.2 million).
One of the key, if not core, components that CDPR is retaining is what made GOG appealing to the masses: the ability for gamers to purchase DRM-free titles, and that’s not going to change anytime soon. Basically, same access, smae offline installers, same sense of ownership. Your data remains on the platform, while the Galaxy launcher remains optional.
“GOG will remain independent in its operations. We will continue building a platform that’s ethical, non-predatory, and made to last, while helping indie developers reach the world. We’re also committed to giving the community a stronger voice, with new initiatives planned for 2026.”
As noble as CDPR’s intentions are, one factor that remains constant is that GOG is still not as popular a platform as Steam or Epic. While it is able to pull the game libraries from other platforms, the bulk of its identity is still pretty much tied to the Polish developer’s titles. Case in point, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077. Sure, The Witcher 4 might change that in the near future, but we doubt that it would be seismic-shifting.
