The EV giant is preparing to enter the East Malaysian market as job listings surface for new roles in Kuching, Sarawak.

Tesla is expanding its presence in Malaysia, as the automaker is making the necessary arrangements for its entry into East Malaysia, particularly in Kuching, Sarawak. This came to light when the company advertised job opportunities for Senior Tesla Sales Advisor positions on both JobStreet and Moka HR.

Just to recap, the first Tesla Centre in Malaysia was established back in 2023 in Cyberjaya. It serves as office space for its employees, as well as a showroom and service centre.

Since then, Tesla has expanded its footprint by establishing additional showrooms and service centres in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor, and Cyberjaya. The company has also opened multiple charging stations across the nation, including supercharger locations.

As for models, there are currently three available in Malaysia; the Model 3, Model Y, and the Model Y Juniper. Recently, the company updated the Model 3 line-up in the local market with the addition of a new Long-Range Rear-Wheel Drive (LR-RWD) variant, alongside revised pricing for the Long-Range AWD and Performance AWD variants.

Earlier this year, discussions also surfaced regarding the possibility of the EV manufacturer establishing a manufacturing plant in Malaysia. According to Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, the decision will depend on the automaker’s assessment of commercial viability amid increasing competition in both regional and domestic markets.

However, with Tesla’s ongoing expansion into the East Malaysian market, it appears that the brand continues to receive a strong reception locally. Should this growth continue, there could be a real possibility of Tesla models being locally assembled in Malaysia, a move that would be strategically beneficial, especially as tax exemptions for CBU EVs are set to end at the close of this year.
