Toyota at the Japan Mobility Show unveiled a new concept of its most reliable and high selling model, the Corolla. The Corolla for many years now has been the people’s car and the automaker would like to keep it that way while evolving the car to the needs of current trend by presenting it as an a fully electric vehicle (EV).
Design wise the Corolla concept features presents a sleek, futuristic design defined by sharp lines and a low, aerodynamic stance. A continuous LED light strip stretches across the nose, seamlessly integrating with the slim, angular headlights. It also comes with a closed of grille, a sculpted hood and aggressive front bumper contours.
Its rear end is characterised by a continuous LED light bar that stretches across the width of the vehicle, complemented by a subtle integrated spoiler and coupe like silhouette. The flush door handles, large aerodynamic wheels, and clean side surfaces add to its aggressive aesthetic.
Inside, the Corolla concept features a futuristic cabin that perfectly complements its bold exterior. It sports a compact three-spoke steering wheel flanked by a series of digital displays, while the traditional gear selector has been replaced by an elevated touchpad, creating a more open and spacious layout between the seats. The overall design appears to be inspired by the cockpit of a futuristic aircraft, reminiscent of the Quinjet from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As for the powertrain, Toyota has yet to reveal any details, keeping information tightly under wraps. However, as mentioned earlier, the new Corolla is expected to be available as an all-electric vehicle, alongside a petrol-powered model, and a hybrid model. According to Toyota CEO Koji Sato, this approach ensures the Corolla remains “the people’s car.”
Sato explained that different countries have different energy realities. In essence, Toyota aims to offer the new Corolla globally; an EV in regions with robust charging infrastructure, and petrol or hybrid options where conventional fuels remain dominant.
If this plan comes to fruition, the Corolla could once again solidify its status as the car for everyone. However, given its long-standing reputation for reliability, Toyota carries a significant responsibility to uphold that legacy.
