It is common knowledge that heat ranks pretty high on the list of a phone’s worst enemies. Devices perform poorly when they overheat, making temperature management crucial during intensive tasks like gaming. While many modern phones like the new iPhone 17 Pro models come with vapour chambers for cooling, this is not always enough to keep things chill. Fortunately though, it seems one Redditor has a solution, as evidenced by their modded iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Posting on the r/iPhone subreddit, user u/T-K-Tronix shared photos of the phone, which has several SSD heatsinks affixed to its back panel. The setup looks like something out of Victor Frankenstein’s lab, but one cannot argue with the results. One of the images shows how the modded creation fared against a 3DMark Steel Nomad Light Unlimited test. It reached 90.5% stability, with a score ranging from 2,455 to 2,712.

Previously, YouTuber Max Tech ran the same benchmark on an untouched iPhone 17 Pro Max. The phone attained a 69.4% stability rating, with scores between 1,608 and 2,318. It’s nowhere near the modded device’s performance, which goes to show how much temperature can limit your phone’s capabilities.
That said, this setup is obviously nowhere near practical, given how much bulk the coolers add to the device. The modder suggests using it for ProRes recording with camera cages. But beyond that, one probably wouldn’t find many situations where it would make sense.
