Action cam brand GoPro has announced two new additions to its product line. One is the Max2 360-degree action cam, and the other is the Lit Hero, which is probably best described as its flagship Hero line given a retro treatment. The former was teased a couple of months back, itself being not too long after a refresh of the predecessor model
PetaPixel reports that GoPro has claimed its Max2 as being “the only ‘True 8K 360 video capture camera on the market”‘. This is in reference to two competitors, the Insta360 X5 360 and DJI Osmo 360 having technically less than 8K resolution for their 360-degree videos. The report includes the explanation of the situation by Insta360, though this looks to stem from industry conflating UHD resolution with 4K.

Beyond that, GoPro claims that the Max2 also provides “superior colours and overall image quality, industry-leading six microphone audio performance and convenient twist-off replaceable glass lenses”. Which translate to 10-bit video capture with GP-Log, and 29MP photos with its two image sensors.
Recording in 8K limits framerates to 30fps, though 2x and 3x slow-motion is possible at 5.6K 60fps and 4K 100fps. As for single-lens capture, you get a choice of 4K 60fps or 1080p 60 fps. The report notes that the GoPro max2 is available starting 30 September for US$499.99 (~RM2,104). No word on local details yet at the time of writing.

Moving on to the GoPro Lit Hero, this is claimed to be made to “capitalise on the retro-look trends”. And it looks the part, with the front screen found on the average Hero action cam replaced with a four LED array flash. This does mean missing out on the ability to see what you’re shooting when taking selfies.
That’s not the only concession you’re making either, as the report says it features a 12MP Type 1/2.8 image sensor with a 15mm equivalent f/2.3 lens. This is in contrast to the Hero13 Black, which has a 27MP Type 1.1/9 sensor and a 12-39mm f/2.5 equivalent lens.
All that being said, the report says it is priced at US$269.99 (~RM1,136) and will be available on 21 October. As before, local details are not yet available at the time of writing.
