Qualcomm Confirms Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Name

Lots of justifications in the blog post, but at least one makes sense.

Late last month, serial leakster Digital Chat Station made the claim that the next flagship Qualcomm mobile chipset will be called the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen5. We had our own idea as to why it could make sense, contrived as it is. Regardless, the company has confirmed in a blog post that the name is accurate, with some formatting differences.

So officially, the chip is called the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. No, neither of those are typos. The space there is essentially the difference between what the leakster claimed it to be and what the company says it actually is. Said confirmation comes via an official blog post, with a long list of justifications that don’t quite square the circle.

The post says “it might look like we skipped generations, but the truth is simpler”. This is then followed by “while the naming may look new, it’s actually a continuation of our established framework”. Those claims would make sense had the company called the Snapdragon 8 Elite the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 instead. After all, the Snapdragon 8 series without any additional suffixes was already understood to be the top-of-the-line product. But here we are.

To combine the old naming convention with the new, which lasted for a single generation, we arrive at the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Which brings us to the one justification in the blog post that makes sense. The company says “our naming helps consumers and OEMs alike understand where each product fits and when it makes its debut”. Until the next chip gets called something that’s not the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, that is.
