Last week, Spotify announced that it is finally rolling out, albeit extremely slowly, lossless audio. More recently, the streaming service announce something else. This would be good news to free users, but it being news in the first place is baffling. And that is free users can now pick and choose which track you want to listen to.
Spotify has broken the feature down into three parts, with fancy-ish names for each. They are “Pick & Play”, “Search & Play” and “Share & Play”. But this simply means, regardless of if you encounter a track via an album or if you directly searched for it, you can play it specifically.
For why this is has become newsworthy in the first place, Spotify had locked free users into shuffling albums and playlists. Compound this with a limited number of skips, and it can be quite the wait to get to what you want to listen to. Thankfully that’s no longer a thing, assuming it has already completed its rollout.
Of course, that Spotify deemed it important that “Share & Play” was its own thing meant that free users couldn’t immediately listen to something someone else shared. That has changed now, which will undoubtedly make the user experience for non-paying users a lot more pleasant.
