Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) has announced that the Temporary Holding Amount (temporary charge) for the use of debit or credit cards will be reduced to RM1, effective 1 September 2025. Since the introduction of cashless payments in November 2023, the temporary charge had been set at RM30.

For the uninitiated, the Temporary Holding Amount is the sum held after a debit or credit card has been scanned and verified by the Card Scanning Machine at the Automatic Control Gate (ACG) in commuter stations. It applies across all Komuter routes, with the actual fare only deducted once the passenger exits the station.

As before, refunds for the temporary amount will follow the terms set by the respective banks. As the RM30 charge was seen as relatively high for most passengers, the reduction is expected to ease their burden when travelling on KTMB’s trains.

Earlier this year, KTMB announced that it has fully adopted a cashless ticketing system across Malaysia, covering services in the Klang Valley, northern, southern, and east coast sectors. Supported payment methods include the operator’s Komuter Link card and KTMB Mobile (KITS) app, alongside third-party platforms such as MyDebit, Visa, Mastercard, Touch ‘n Go, Google Pay, Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.
