U Mobile has announced the activation of its ULTRA5G network in Putrajaya and the state of Sabah’s capital city Kota Kinabalu. On top of expanding its own 5G network to more parts of Malaysia, the telco says this rollout is also intended to allow users to experience it for themselves during the upcoming Merdeka Day and Sabah Day celebrations on 31 August 2025.
According to the telco, the Kota Kinabalu deployment is being carried out with ZTE and Celcom Timur Sabah, though details of the Putrajaya rollout were not disclosed. U Mobile had earlier announced in April that Huawei would oversee its 5G deployments in Peninsular Malaysia, while ZTE would manage those in East Malaysia.
Among the new sites revealed by U Mobile include Padang Bandaran and Karamunsing Shopping Complex in Kota Kinabalu. Elaborating further, a telco representative told us that the exact locations in the Sabah capital where users can experience the ULTRA5G network are areas located along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, towards the coastal area between Tanjung Aru Beach and Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal. Meanwhile, in Putrajaya, the network spans along Persiaran Perdana, between Affind Bank to Wisma Tani.
Much like at Berjaya Times Square and Penang Bridge 1, those subscribed to U Mobile are able to identify when they are connected to the network in these locations by referring to the network name displayed on their devices, which should show “UM ULTRA5G”. Additionally, the telco says coverage in both Putrajaya and Kota Kinabalu will continue to grow, while expansions to other parts of Malaysia will be announced in the near future.
