There have been several leaks and rumours about the unreleased PlayStation 6 (PS6), and with the success of Nintendo’s Switch series consoles, Sony clearly wants a piece of the pie. To that end, new rumours have arisen that the PS6 may adopt the handheld form factor, and it will be powered by an AMD chipset called “Canis”.
Two sources of the rumours come from rumour monger Moore’s Law is Dead (MLID), whose most recent video spoke on the internals of the alleged PlayStation 6 Canis chipset. Supposedly, Canis is expected to be based on TSMC’s 3nm process node, while its CPU core will comprise four Zen6c cores and two Zen6 LP cores, bringing the total core count to six.

The custom chipset could also support up to 48GB of LPDDR5x-8533 RAM, running across a 192-bit memory bus, although the final amount clearly has yet to be decided. For context, a 192-bit memory bus running at the 8553MT/s translates to more than 200GB/s of memory bandwidth; more than double what the current ROG Ally X is capable of, but still less than half of the current PlayStation 5’s prowess.
Moving on, MLID also believes that the PlayStation 6 chipset will also feature 16CU RDNA5 cores, running at around 1.2GHz when in handheld mode, and 1.65GHz when running in Docked Mode. Features-wise, Canis could include support for a MicroSD card slot, an M.2 SSD slot, haptic vibration, dual microphones, and a touch display.

MLID also goes on to speculate on pricing for the alleged PlayStation 6 handheld. They believe that, should a model with 36GB RAM come to light, it could allow Sony to bring the price under the US$500 (~RM2,113), bringing it more in line with the current price tag of the Nintendo Switch 2, assuming the latter hasn’t applied a price cut by the time Sony releases the console.
That brings us to the potential launch window of the supposed PlayStation 6 handheld. Supposedly, MLID believes that the machine could launch in 2027, rather than the proposed 2028 window Shuhei Yoshida forecasted. Again, this is all just speculation, so we wouldn’t recommend that you treat their word as gospel.
