Earlier in the year, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reported that the successor to the AirTag was supposed to be released sometime around the middle of the year. Ironically, the projected window came and went without so much as a trace of the rumoured tracking device. However, following the confirmation of Apple’s annual fall event, new rumours emerged that the device will make its appearance at the event on 10 September.
Gurman reported earlier this year that “the new AirTag” is nearly ready, having been prepared for launch over the past several months.” According to 9to5Google, it is speculated that the tracking device will be released alongside the brand’s upcoming products, such as the iPhone 17 line, a new AirPods iteration, and even the new Apple Watch.

The AirTag successor is said to feature an upgraded wireless chip, improved precision at a greater range, enhanced privacy features, and better countermeasures against tampering. Despite these upgrades, Gurman reported that the device will “look similar to the current model”, perhaps focusing more on function over form.
Given that this is a rumour, there is the possibility that the device may have more or fewer features than initially reported. On the flip side, whether or not the new AirTag will be released at the supposed event itself remains to be seen. But we’ll find out in slightly under two weeks.
