Google Appears To Be Working On A Duolingo Competitor

Available via Google Translate, the new feature will teach you new languages with personalised lessons.

It goes without saying that Google Translate has been the dominant translating tool that many people have been relying on. But rather than just translating words for you, it appears that the multilingual machine may soon begin teaching you languages from scratch.

Although Google has yet to announce the feature, Android Authority managed to access and activate the long-rumoured practice tool that was hidden within the most recent version of the app. This is the first time the feature has been observed ever since the publication first mentioned it back in April.

YouTube video

In practice, the tool heavily relies on AI to create personalised lessons for you. You do have the option of what language you want to learn, but as of now, your only options are English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. However, Android Authority reported that you can only practise French and Spanish right now.

When you’ve chosen your desired language, you will be asked whether you have “Basic”, “Intermediate”, or “Advanced” knowledge so it can start teaching you. The tool will also let you choose a variety of scenarios for you to practise with. You are also given the option to create your own practice scenarios by describing the situation in a text prompt.

Android Authority also reported that the app mentions a “trial period” with “early and unlimited access”, suggesting that it is currently free but might become a paid service down the line. However, it is not yet clear whether or not this service will be a standalone payment or be bundled with the Google Gemini package. That said, its expected availability is also not known at this time.
