Samsung just launched the Galaxy Watch8 slightly over a month ago. But that’s not stopping the company from working on two generations of sequels. Or so says company executive director of the health hardware development group Choi Jong-min in a press conference in its home market.
South Korean outlet Sisa Journal cites the exec as saying that Samsung plains its devices for up to five years in advance. This means it’s already talking internally about what features are close to commercialisation, be included in future products. This is where the Galaxy Watch9 and 10 were mentioned specifically.
Machine translation of the report also pointed at comparisons being made between Samsung wearables and that of Chinese competitors. While Choi acknowledges that Chinese brands are gaining market share, the selling points of their products are different. These stand out due to their battery life of up to 10 days on a single charge. Buy Choi says this is because they use low-power microcontroller units, which leads to lower performance.
Inversely, Choi says that Samsung wearables instead focus on enhancing “healthcare features”. The antioxidant index introduced with the Galaxy Watch8 may be one example. Of course, whether or not that’s worth the battery life trade off, your mileage may vary.
