As part of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) tabling today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has revealed that the government is aiming to expand 5G coverage to 98% of residential, industrial and rural areas by 2030. The push is in line with efforts to accelerate artificial intelligence adoption across the nation.
“This isn’t just about infrastructure,” Anwar said. “It’s about building the digital backbone that enables Malaysians in all corners of the country to participate in the AI-driven economy.”
In line with its push for digital transformation, the government is also targeting for 95% of federal public services to be delivered entirely online by 2030. Additionally, a unified public sector gateway will be developed to streamline interactions between citizens and government agencies, aiming to improve efficiency and accessibility.

To safeguard public trust in the digital ecosystem, a National Digital Trust and Cybersecurity Strategy will be rolled out to focus on strengthening data protection, countering cyber threats, and preserving Malaysia’s digital sovereignty. Complementing this, the government also plans to establish a National Data Bank to serve as a centralised data repository, while a dedicated Data Commission will be formed to oversee digital governance and ensure responsible data handling practices across the public and private sectors.
