To ensure the Galaxy Z Fold7 is as durable as it can be, Samsung has opted to give it a titanium back plate. It’s an understandable move, considering it is now thinner than ever before. But it looks like the use of the material is not guaranteed for next year’s Galaxy Z Fold8. A recent report indicates that the South Korean tech giant may revert to carbon fibre-reinforced plastics (CFRP) of previous models.
Or more specifically, The Elec reports that Samsung is still weighing between the use of either material. The reason for this is – you may have already guessed it – the whole US tariff situation. The report notes that the company sources its titanium from China, which puts its use a bit in a bit of a risk.
Samsung has used CFRP in its previous Galaxy Z Fold series since the Fold3. For the first two iterations, the company used stainless steel instead. Oddly enough, the switch to CFRP was noted as a change to accommodate the S-Pen stylus. While it’s not a concern for the current Fold7, it remains to be seen if it will be a factor for the Fold8.
On that note, the report mentions that Samsung is still working on digitiser tech. More specifically, the company is developing a thinner digitiser so that future Fold entries can be S-Pen compatible again.
