Sony has unveiled the RX1R III, its latest full-frame compact camera. This new model arrives nearly a decade after its predecessor, also offering a fixed lens experience as well as improved hardware and features throughout.
Newly introduced on the RX1R III is the larger 61MP full-frame Exmor R back-illuminated CMOS sensor, marking a significant bump over the Mk II’s 42.4MP. Its capture area covers approximately 78% with up to 693 densely arranged phase-detection autofocus (AF) points. Paired with the sensor is Sony’s BIONZ XR image processor, which allows for high resolution images with low noise and wide dynamic range. Also onboard is the latest AI processing unit, allowing for snappy and accurate AF as well as subject tracking (eyes, heads, etc).

As with previous Sony RX1R cameras, the third generation model features a fixed lens setup – specifically, a Zeiss Sonnar T* 35mm F2. Thanks to its large sensor, users can take advantage of the built-in Step Crop Shooting function, which can also simulate 50mm and 70mm focal lengths on top of the default 35mm mode. The different focal lengths can be selected via assigned buttons or dials, while shooting in RAW format allows you to reselect each one during post-production. Additionally, the lens features macro capabilities that lets you capture subjects as close as 20cm at 0.26 magnification.

The camera features a compact and lightweight magnesium alloy body, along with a grip design and textured surface for a comfortable hold. Also onboard are different dials, a multi-interface shoe, a 2.36M-dot XGA OLED electronic viewfinder with 0.70x magnification, and a 7.5cm TFT LCD touchscreen with 2.3M-dot resolution. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2 support for wireless, a HDMI micro connector (Type-D), a 3.5mm stereo minijack, a USB-C port (with Power Delivery support), and a slot for UHS-I/II SD cards.
For battery, the RX1R III supports Sony’s NP-FW50 rechargeable packs. According to the company, a single charge would allow for up to 300 still shots and up to 80 minutes of continuous video recording.
Local pricing for the new full-frame compact camera is still unavailable at this time, but Sony confirms that it will see a release in Malaysia later in September this year. For your reference, the RX1R III is priced at a very hefty price point of US$5,100 (~RM21,652) for the US market.
