Ghost of Yotei launches on 2 October on the PS5. Like any other marquee title for a platform, it’s a reason for PlayStation to release a special edition bundle, for both the base and Pro models. Making things even more special is the fact that there are two editions of the special edition.
Starting with the the shinier one, PlayStation says that the artwork combines the imagery of Hokkaido’s Mount Yotei with kintsugi, or the art of repairing broken ceramics with lacquer and gold. On the console, the former takes up the top half of the face plates – or console cover as per the official naming scheme – while the bottom half looks more like cracked ceramic glued back together with gold.
Things are a bit more conventional with the DualSense controller, with what looks like brush marks in gold ink representing the Guiding Wind mechanic. Then there’s the silhouette of a swordsman on the touch pad, which PlayStation says represents Atsu, the protagonist of Ghost of Yotei.
Probably worth mentioning also is the Ghost of Yotei Black Limited Edition Bundle, which basically replaces all the gold with black. PlayStation says that this draws inspiration from Sumi-e, or ink painting, but you’d be hard pressed to say that this applies beyond the DualSense controller. The announcement blog post denotes this as being limited to the direct.playstation.com online store, which isn’t available to us.
If you already have a PS5, or indeed a PS5 Pro, the good news is that you can buy these console covers – as well as the special edition DualSense – separately. On the flip side, the bad news is that despite the announcement, PlayStation did not provide a price for these Ghost of Yotei Limited Edition bundles and accessories. All that has been shared is that they will be available alongside the game on 2 October. Said game, if you need a refresher, costs RM299, or RM339 if you opt for the Digital Deluxe edition.
