New Code On Spotify App Points To Elusive “Lossless” Tier

Could it be? Is it finally coming?

Spotify and the prospect of the streaming service bringing lossless tier quality audio has long been a pipe dream, and one whose pipes have been continuously laid for the past few years. And in the spirit of keeping that dream alive, a software engineer recently found code inside the service’s app, hinting at the feature and it’s ‘imminent” arrival.

Credit for the discovery of the lossless feature goes to Chris Messina, a self proclaimed technologist and reverse engineer. They supposedly found spatterings of code on the latest build of the Spotify desktop app, relating to the lossless tier.

To be precise, the code mainly refers to help cards that would appear to users, informing them about the benefits that the lossless tier offers. As an example, one card says “Lossless music, now in premium,” while another describes it as the “best sound quality on Spotify for music in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz.”

There’s also another line of code that indicates that some songs may not be available in lossless, or that the tier may not stream at that level, particularly if the user’s internet isn’t operating at the optimal strength or if connectivity is just bad. Another line says “best enjoyed on devices compatible with Spotify Connect and/or wired devices,” further indicating the need for a strong and stable Internet connectivity to stream the tier.

If that wasn’t enough, a Redditor found and posted a screenshot of a page changes that had been made to the mobile version of the code, suggesting that lossless tier is already present on the app; it’s just disabled at the moment and there is no way to access it, at current.

Now, we’re not chasing down fairies and unicorns here, and as exciting as some of us are at the supposedly and, again, imminent arrival of the lossless tier, we do recommend that you apply a strong dose of skepticism to it until Spotify officially reveals it, even if this recent discovery appears more airtight than previous discoveries.
