WhatsApp has many features that it tests before being rolled out to the general user base, and one of them that has been recently discovered is AI summaries for unread chat messages. WABetaInfo reports that it’s being gradually rolled out to beta testers, but as of now there’s no word on a general release yet.
The report notes that the feature has been spotted in the beta version for WhatsApp on Android, specifically with the version 2.25.18.18 update. AI summaries are not turned on by default, and to do so you’ll have to look for the Private Processing setting. You’ll also need to accumulate a certain number of unread messages before it kicks in.
These AI summaries are noted to be generated by Meta AI, and that they are processes without sending data to WhatsApp or Meta. That being said, the app won’t be able to provide summaries for chats with Advanced Chat privacy enabled. This would be an interesting test of the the AI’s capability, and whether or not it will produce funny results the way Apple’s notifications summaries sometimes end up being pretty wild.

Also being tested is the ability for WhatsApp users to set the quality of media being automatically downloaded. Which is strange because the ability to choose the quality of media files to be sent was rolled back in December of 2023.
