The Apple WWDC 2025 keynote introduced updates to its operating systems, and watchOS 26 is no exception. In addition to the Liquid Glass design language, the update will introduce a wrist flick gesture for managing notifications. The gesture will be added to Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2.
When checking notifications, the user can quickly turn their wrist over and back to dismiss the notifications if they do not want to respond. Aside from dismissing calls and notifications, the gesture can be used to silence timers and alarms, as well as return to the watch face. The way this feature works is by using the accelerometer and gyroscope with a machine learning model to analyse the user’s wrist movement.

Another highlight of the update is the addition of Workout Buddy, which is powered by Apple Intelligence. The feature generates personalised, motivational insights during a workout session based on the user’s workout data and fitness history. Some examples of Workout Buddy’s capabilities include giving pep talks, marking key moments or milestones, and recap workout stats and congratulate the user on their achievements.
Furthermore, the Workout app gets an updated layout, which includes the addition of four new buttons for easy access to features like Workout Views, Custom Workout, Pacer, Race Route, and more. Additionally, users can set up music and podcasts in the app, which can be played automatically at the start of the workout.

Smart Stack will also get some improvements in this update, namely in terms of incorporating contextual data and information like the user’s routine to provide useful suggestions. Other updates include support for Live Translation in Messages, Live Listen controls, as well as a watch face gallery redesign. Naturally, watchOS 26 will only arrive in autumn along with the other operating system updates.
