Apple is expected to mainly focus on an operating system overhaul at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), but it seems that AirPods might also get some attention at the event. According to a report by 9to5Mac, the company is working on a handful of features to be added to the audio products, including camera controls and sleep detection, among other things.
The report claimed that Apple will add a feature that allows users to remotely control the iPhone or iPad camera. Users will reportedly be able to take pictures by tapping the stem of the AirPods. It is worth noting that camera controls are not new, as the company had previously included them in its old EarBuds.
In addition to this, the company is apparently working on adding a feature that will automatically pause playback when it detects that the user has fallen asleep. It is uncertain whether the feature will exist on its own or if it will require an Apple Watch, as the watch already has sleep detection. Currently, users have to resort to using sleep timers if they wish for the audio to stop playing when they fall asleep, which is not always reliable.
Aside from that, Apple could be adding new head gestures, with one of them allowing users to extend the Conversation Awareness volume adjustment. Moreover, the company is allegedly developing a “studio quality” mic mode that separates background elements from speech. Another feature reportedly in the works is aimed to improve pairing AirPods with shared iPads.
