Since its debut in 1976, the Volkswagen Golf GTI has gained a rich history and a legendary status as a performance hatchback in the automaker’s line-up. But, as the automotive world shifts gears towards electrification, even the mighty GTI isn’t immune to change.
Behind the scenes, development is already in full swing. Volkswagen’s engineers are busy testing early versions of the electric Golf GTI. And Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schafer has been behind the wheel, calling the test cars “mind-blowing” and even referring to the future model as a “monster car.”

This electric hot hatch won’t just be a reworked petrol GTI with a battery. It’ll be built on VW’s new SSP platform, designed from the ground up for EVs. The focus isn’t only on raw speed either. Kai Grünitz, one of Volkswagen’s technical leads, are zeroed in on how the car handles, how it sounds, and how it feels on a twisty backroad. Moreover, just like the previous Golf GTIs, the EV version of it will also feature front-wheel drive.
The official debut of the car is yet to be officially announced by the automaker. However, there are reports that it is likely to make its debut next year, 2026, since it is the 50th anniversary of the original Golf GTI.

On the other hand, this is not the only electric GTI, as VW has announced that they are making a whole line-up of them starting with the ID.2. There are also rumours that the ID.3 could be next in line for the GTI treatment along with the ID.1.
