OPPO has announced the local arrival of the A5 5G, the vanilla counterpart to the A5 Pro series released a couple of months back. However, while it is already available in Malaysia, you will not be able to buy it just yet, which we will get into in a bit.
First off, here are the specs, which are quite different from the version launched in China. The A5 5G is equipped with a 6.67-inch 720p LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a global peak brightness of 1,000 nits. Inside, it runs on a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

For imaging, it features a 50MP main camera, a depth sensor, and an 8MP front snapper. Powering the budget device is a large 6,000mAh battery with support for 45W charging. On the protection side, it sports a Corning Gorilla Glass 7i screen cover as well as an IP65 rating, while connectivity-wise, it supports 5G, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, and a headphone jack.
The OPPO A5 5G is currently only available for free through U Mobile, meaning that it needs to be tied to a postpaid contract. While the telco’s website lists the retail price at RM1,099, it is unclear when it will be available for purchase on its own.
UPDATE: The A5 5G is now also available at RM0 through Maxis postpaid plans.
