Amid challenging financial times for Japanese automaker Nissan, its CEO Ivan Espinosa has confirmed that an all-new Skyline is in development. The announcement was made during the company’s 2024 fiscal year financial report. However, before you get too hyped up – no, this isn’t a new GT-R. The Skyline and GT-R may share a history, but they’ve been separate models for a long time.
This next-gen Skyline will be one of the first to roll out under Nissan’s new development approach – aimed at slashing engineering costs, simplifying the process, and speeding up production. According to Carsguide, the reborn Skyline could turn up as an SUV, positioned above the brand’s Ariya EV.

It may even borrow high-performance tech from the Ariya Nismo, which packs dual electric motors, with an output of 320kW and 600Nm of torque, and all-wheel drive. At present, the Skyline is a four-door saloon in Japan, recently given a limited-run Nismo makeover.
Over its decades-long life, the Skyline has taken many forms – coupe, saloon, wagon, SUV, even a delivery van. Whether its next iteration will actually take the form of an SUV remains to be seen, as Nissan has yet to provide any details.

As for financial side of things, Nissan posted at loss of JPY670.9 billion (~RM19.6 billion) for FY24, with the fourth quarter alone accounting for JPY676 billion (~RM19.7 billion) in losses. To stop the bleeding, the company is launching an aggressive cost-cutting plan under the “Re:Nissan” banner, aiming to save JPY500 billion (~RM14.6 billion) by FY26.
That plan includes slashing 20,000 jobs across all departments, trimming its factory count from 17 to 10, and cancelling a new battery plant in Kyushu. Half the targeted savings will come from fixed cost cuts; the other half from streamlining operations and engineering. Nissan is even freezing all post-FY26 product development for now, shifting 3,000 employees to focus purely on driving down costs.
