The Volvo XC70 is returning as the company’s first Range-Extended Plug-In Hybrid (RE-PHEV). The automaker claims that it will be able to provide up to 200km of pure CLTC electric range, meaning it will be available for in China first. Nevertheless, the automaker did mention that it is exploring the possibility of introducing it in other markets in the future.

Volvo did not reveal much about the XC70, such as the powertrain and so on. However, the it did mention that the car is built on the company’s new Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA) platform, which is a premium extended range plug-in hybrid architecture.

Since it is a RE-PHEV, it is expected that a battery-powered motor would be placed at the front axle of the car. Meanwhile, an internal combustion engine should function as its range extender, activating when the battery’s charge drops below a specific threshold. A close-up image reveals that the XC70 will be offered in an all-wheel drive (AWD) configuration.

In terms of design, the XC70 pretty much has same design elements that can be seen in recent Volvo models. This includes the automaker’s signature Thor’s Hammer LED daytime running lights that are placed above the main headlamps using matrix LED technology at the front, while the rear features C-shaped taillights that reach up along the window and into the tailgate. There are also small light bars that are connected to the blacked-out grille. With a steeply slanted rear window, the XC70 appears to have a sleeker shape in profile than the larger XC90.

As mentioned above, the automaker is tight-lipped about other information on the Volvo XC70. More information is expected to be revealed soon.
