After a three-year wait, the much-anticipated JMEV 01 electric roadster has finally been launched in China with a price tag of CNY229,800 (~RM136,947). Originally introduced as the SSC SC-01 back in 2022 by Tianjin Gongjiangpai Auto Technology (TGAT) — a Xiaomi-affiliated tuning outfit — the project faced a series of hurdles before reaching production.

Initially expected to roll out in late 2023, the SC-01‘s delivery was delayed due to a delay acquiring a sales licence. Fast-forward to January 2025; TGAT partnered with Jiangling Motors Electric Vehicle (JMEV), rebranded the car as the JMEV 01, and successfully obtained approval.

Production soon began at JMEV’s plant in Nanchang. Now that it’s officially on sale, let’s take a closer look at what the JMEV 01 brings to the table.

Taking cues from Ferrari, the JMEV 01 features a sharply sloped bonnet accompanied by large air intakes. Intriguingly, the headlights also incorporate open air intakes with no covers or lenses. Other notable design elements include a blacked-out front pillar and classic circular tail lights.

A major highlight of the JMEV 01 is its tube frame chassis, helping keep its curb weight down to just 1,365 kg. It rides on a double-wishbone suspension setup front and rear, paired with racing-grade adjustable dampers. Braking is handled by hefty 360 mm discs, with six-piston callipers up front and four-piston units at the back.

The roadster’s low centre of gravity — a mere 380 mm — is said to promise sharp handling, and the 2503 mm wheelbase should strike a good balance between agility and stability. It’s fitted with 245/40 ZR18 tyres mounted on magnesium-aluminium alloy rims, each weighing just 5.9 kg.

Inside, the JMEV 01 keeps things simple and driver-focused. Two carbon-fibre sports seats with integrated headrests and strong side bolstering dominate the interior.

The steering wheel is a sporty D-shaped three-spoke unit, sitting in front of a digital LCD instrument cluster. Physical controls for the air conditioning sit on the centre console, while the gear selector buttons are mounted on the ceiling alongside other switches.

Underneath, the JMEV 01 is powered by two synchronous permanent magnet motors — one on each axle — supplied by Enpower. Each motor delivers 160 kW (214 hp), resulting in a combined output of 320 kW (429 hp). The electric roadster does the century sprint in just 2.9 seconds, with a top speed capped at 200 km/h.

Juicing the motors is a 60 kWh ternary NMC battery pack, sourced from CALB, positioned behind the seats for better weight distribution. Under CLTC testing conditions, the JMEV 01 is rated for up to 500 km on a full charge. Charging from 30% to 80% takes just 36 minutes.

For now, the JMEV 01 is offered in a single trim for the Chinese market, with no word yet on international availability. But as mentioned, it costs CNY229,800 in its home market
