The Home Ministry (KDN) is proposing to broaden the use of the MyDigital ID app, with initial focus on its application in settling traffic summonses, according to its minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. However, he said that while the use of the system is not yet compulsory, steps are being taken to expand its role in government-related transactions.
“In fact, the government has agreed to amend the National Registration Act 1959 to enable the official and comprehensive use of digital identification,” he said during a speech at the Royal Malaysian Police’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration at Titiwangsa Stadium. “It is still a suggestion and has yet to be passed at Parliament, but we encourage the public to use the app for identification confirmation in all matters.”
As part of the move, dealings involving the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) will prioritise registered users of the app. To incentivise adoption, the government is considering offering additional benefits to those utilising the system. For example, registered users could receive greater discounts when settling traffic summonses.
“Previously, there was a 50% discount,” the Home Minister said. “With MyDigital ID, maybe it will be 55%.”
Beyond traffic-related transactions, Saifuddin says the ministry is also exploring the integration of MyDigital ID into other public service areas. The initiative forms part of the country’s ongoing digital transformation policy.
