Last year, we saw reports that YouTube was testing its own take on X’s Community Notes. Now another video hosting platform has announced its own. This time it’s TikTok, and its own version of the feature is called Footnotes.
The way it works is pretty much like Community Notes, but if you’re unfamiliar, this relies on fellow viewers on TikTok to add, well, Footnotes, to video content that may be misleading, or needs context or clarification. Added notes are then voted on by other users on their helpfulness before they are visible to the rest of the community.

Of course, TikTok is not just letting anyone contribute to or vote on Footnotes. Eligible users must have been on the platform for more than six months, and are of 18 years of older, plus have no “recent history” of violating the platform’s community guidelines.
Worth noting though that TikTok has said as part of the announcement that Footnotes “will be tested in the US”. And so only those in the country who meet the aforementioned criteria can apply or be notified of their eligibility. It remains to be seen if the platform has plans for a global rollout, though that may be tough considering the situation fo the app in the US.
